Lloyd Athearn sees the forest for the trees — a quality that makes him a great executive director for the Colorado Fourteeners Initiative (CFI). According to Lloyd, the hallmark of a leader is the ability to see a way out of any situation and get your team on board for your plan. His survivalist management style has helped him make great strides at CFI and recently caught the attention of Jim Proppe, managing partner of Plante Moran.

Jim and Lloyd first connected when the CFI won the grand prize in a charity contest Plante Moran hosted to celebrate their expansion into the Rocky Mountain region. And when Jim heard about the way Lloyd led a major turnaround at CFI, he knew it would make for an insightful interview for his “Learn from Leaders” series. In this blog, Jim and Lloyd discuss Lloyd’s leadership inspiration, why CFI treats all their donors like “big donors,” and the importance of channeling your “inner MacGyver.”
